      • Family: Finch.
      • Length: 8-1/4 inches.
      • Wingspan: 12-1/2 inches.
      • Distinctive Markings: Males have black head, brownish-orange underparts and bicolored bill; black and white tail and white wing patches. Female is brown with striped head, back and sides.
      • Nest: In dense outer foliage of tree or shrub.
      • Song: Whistled warble, faster, higher and choppier than the rose-breasted.
      • Habitat: Along water and open woods.
      • Diet: Seeds, berries and insects.
      • Backyard Favorites: Sunflower and safflower seeds.
