Last summer, we held our annual Birds & Blooms Backyard Photo Contest and received more than 7,000 bird, bloom and butterfly photos. After narrowing it down to four photos per category, we left it up to our readers to decide the winner in each category, as well as the grand-prize winner. Although Deborah Saldana’s breath-taking closeup of a hesperoyucca plant and Doreen Damm’s striking shot of a zebra swallowtail won their respective categories, it was Jim Ridley of Brighton, Michigan who walked away with the grand-prize. Readers overwhelmingly voted for his dynamic photo of two feisty Eastern bluebirds.
In Jim’s original submission, he said, “I captured this image of a hungry juvenile and male adult Eastern bluebirds in my Michigan backyard. The adult birds had been feeding when the juvenile loudly reminded them that he couldn’t fend for himself quite yet. I decided to enter this photo in particular, because I love the wing placement on the adult male and this fascinating moment between the two birds. I used a Nikon D4s with a Nikkor 500mm lens.” Congratulations, Jim!
If you missed last year’s photo contest, don’t worry! We’ll be announcing the start of our 2017 Backyard Photo Contest this summer!
